Job Summary:
This position assists in organizing and directing the activities of the infection prevention and control, and employee health programs for all departments throughout the facility. These responsibilities include but are not limited to: screening and surveillance, infection prevention and control measures, education for employees, aspects of safety, risk management and worker’s compensation.

Essential Functions

Conducts focused surveillance for healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), detects and records HAIs on a systematic and current basis, analyzes HAIs and prepares reports for the Infection Control Comm! ittee of the facility. Reports communicable diseases as required by regulation.

Makes recommendations when problems are identified. Interprets department policies and procedures in conjunction with the supervisor. Interacts with physicians, nurses, department managers, supervisors, and other professional and non-professional staff members as a consultant.

Enters data into computer, prepares reports, conducts analytical studies and summarizes surveillance data. Initiates epidemiological investigations of significant clusters of infections and single cases of unusual infection. Assists with continuing infection control education and in-service programs to departments, including orientation for new employees.

Responsible for managing the employee health services for all healthcare workers. Develops and executes adult immunization programs, health care worker education, exposure management, screening and surveillance. Maintains confidential employee h! ealth records and environmental exposure monitoring. Provides pre-place! ment health evaluations for new health care workers and ongoing counseling and education.

Maintains current knowledge of State and Federal regulations, CDC recommendations and JCAHO standards related to Infection Control/Employee Health/Workers’ Compensation. Provides education related to these regulations and standards to the appropriate staff and serves as a liaison between national, state and local governing authorities and our health care system.

Manages the workers’ compensation program including filing claims, maintaining OSHA logs and managing the modified duty return to work program. Collaborates with Human Resources on employee issues relating to RTW, ADA and FMLA.

Reviews and assists with evaluation of hospital policies, procedures and guidelines as they relate to infection control. Assists in writing and revising infection control policies and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires a current RN license with BS! N preferred, OR Masters in Public Health (MPH), OR certified medical technologist, OR a bachelor's degree in microbiology/epidemiology, OR equivalent clinical experience.

Must have clinical experience in a hospital setting or disease surveillance in a public health setting a minimum of 2 years. Must demonstrate current knowledge of infectious diseases, infection control, and/or public health.

Must be proficient with commonly used software applications/databases and have the ability to access and use information when necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

Association for Practitioners in Infection Control (APIC) training course or equivalent desired. Certification in Infection Control (CIC) is preferred. National certified by the American Board for Occupational Health Nurses, Inc., (COHN-S) is strongly encouraged. Current breath/alcohol testing certification and audiology testing certification may be preferred by some facilities.
