Nursing Shift Supervisor

Location: Saint Paul, Nebraska

Primary function is to provide, prescribe, delegate, and coordinate nursing care with other health care providers to meet holistic care needs of a designated group of patients.
In addition, provides oversight to the entire on-duty nursing staff. (RNs, LPNs, CNAs, Unit Secretaries).

Day shift and Night Shift positions available.

DUTIES

Formulate clinical decisions and implement multi-dimensional plans of care that demonstrate independent judgment and critical thinking to meet the physical and psychosocial needs of the patient through a collaborative practice with the health care team, ensuring consistency with private standards and/or state and federal regulations. Follows all scope and standards of professional nursing practice guidelines.
Administer oral and IM medications correctly and have knowledge of drug use.
Administer IV medications and maintain proper insertion sites according to HCMC policies and procedures.
Utilize the nursing process to initiate an admission process; and individualize and implement a nursing care plan, including patient/family education and discharge planning.
Demonstrate expertise in systems assessments, recognition of s ignificant changes in patient condition, establishment of priorities, and nursing interventions.
Ensure complete documentation of all aspects of assigned patients.
Promote the team concept through interpersonal relationships with patients, families, medical staff and/or other health care providers to coordinate medical and nursing management of patient care.
Demonstrate respect for patients rights, privacy and serve as a patient advocate.
Communicate with families regarding the patients condition.
Assist the medical staff when necessary with procedures.
Ability to do treatments and maintain sterile procedures.
Direct admissions, dismissals and transfers of patients.
Have working knowledge of Obstetrics, Nursery, Emergency Room, Cardiac, Geriatrics, Pediatrics and Medical-Surgical areas.
Provides resource for practice questions and problem solves.
Provides direct supervision and oversight to LPNs and CNAs. Provides direction and supervi sion of LPN-Cs. Assesses and documents on the IV condition of assigned LPN or LPN-C patients at least once every 24 hours, or more frequently if the patient condition or IV therapy are changed.
Develop personal education objectives and participate in professional growth opportunities to assure continued adherence to professional standards and provision of quality patient care.

Maintain knowledge of unit operations through attendance at unit meetings
Maintains appropriate certification as outlined in the Medical Center licensure policy.
Participate in continuing education to maintain competency and to keep informed of changes affecting nursing and health care.
Assist in orientation of new employees as requested.
Participate in clinical instruction programs to support learning experiences for nursing students.
Participate in and support evidence based nursing practice as demonstrated by involvement in research activities on the unit.
Provid e input into evaluation process of self and other team members
Demonstrate, promote and assist with the Performance Improvement (PI) process to ensure the highest quality patient care.

Provide input for the evidence based practice guidelines and formulation of policies, procedures, and protocol specific to unit with approval of appropriate committees.
Serve on committees/councils or quality teams.
Demonstrate key behavioral skills related to the provision of patient care.

Demonstrate initiative and flexibility in provision of patient care.
Serve as a positive role model and a clinical resource.
Employ strategies to promote a healthy and safe environment.
Utilize effective, appropriate, timely communication skills.
Support medical center goals and management decisions.
Make assignments for on-coming shift.
Provides oversight to the entire on-duty nursing staff. (RNs, LPNs, CNAs, Unit Secretaries)
Resource for clinical guidance of nursing staff and policy/procedure review when situations arise.
Supervises Admission/Discharge/Transfer/Order Entry Routines.
Ensure end of shift chart checks are completed by the primary nurse.
IV Therapy & physical assessment oversight on the nursing unit when an LPN is on duty.
Back-up to the ED & OB nurse.
Primary treatment room nurse when a designated treatment room nurse is not scheduled.
Assists with IV therapy starts in the radiology department when needed.
Takes a patient assignment only when absolutely necessary.
Assesses nursing department patient volumes through-out the shift and makes adjustments as needed, utilizing the present staff on-duty.
Assesses low census needs.
&61607;Calls staff off on low census according to policy.
&61607;Documents low census hours on the rotation calendar.
&61607;Documents low census on the nursing schedule.
Responsible for calling in staff when appropriate.
&61607 ;Ensures justification of the staffing need prior to calling in staff on callback.
&61607;Completes appropriate documentation.
&61607;Updates the nursing schedule.
Completes ill call-in/tardy documentation & updates the nursing schedule.
Ensures lunch breaks are taken by all on-duty nursing staff.
Ensures department policy & procedures for patient care, infection control, safety, fire procedures, weather procedures, patient/visitor incidents or falls & facility codes (colored) are followed.
Assists with department quality assurance and HCAHPS initiative compliance.
Ensures follow-up phone calls are completed.
Ensures proper protocols (CP r/o MI, Sepsis, Pneumonia, Isolation, etc) are utilized when appropriate.
Notifies management of patient care or safety issues or unusual occurrences.
Monitors staff completion of Healthstream, Lippincott and other required education during downtime.
Addresses patient/family complaints in the absen ce of nursing administration.
Must be positive, calm, flexible, non-reactive and lead by example.
Must be willing to set & flex work schedule with other shift supervisors.
Performs all other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Current Nebraska Registered Nurse Licensure is required
