Assists pharmacists in preparing and distributing drugs, maintaining the drug inventory and maintenance of ! records under the supervision of a registered pharmacist.

ESSENTIAL

J

OB DUTIES:
1.

Procures and distributes drug orders per physician request, pharmacist request or prearranged work assignment according to established policies, procedures and protocols, and within specified time frame.

2.

Fills physician orders, medication surgical kits, medication carts or medication requisitions and specialty items/bins accurately.

3.

Identifies and fills replacement medications on emergency crash carts, OR carts and automated dispensing machines accurately.

4.

Calculates and prepares sterile products (including chemotherapy and parenteral nutrition) accurately.

5.

Delivers medications and supplies to patient care and ancillary areas accurately.

6.

Maintains adequate stock of medications and supplies according to established policies, procedures and pro! tocols and within specified time frame.

7.

I! dentifies and replaces outdated and unusable drugs.

Rotates stock to ensure use before expiration date.

8.

Assists in ordering, receiving, unpacking and storing pharmaceuticals and supplies in appropriate locations.

9.

Restocks medication and IV dispensing areas.

10.

Prepackages medications in unit of use containers.

11.

Picks up orders, requisitions and medications for return from patient care areas when on delivery rounds.

12.

Enters medication orders into pharmacy computer system accurately.

13.

Enters charges and credits for patient medications accurately.

14.

Generates reports, pick lists and labels as required.

15.

Answers the telephone and directs calls to appropriate personnel.

16.

Answers requests and makes STAT deliveries to patient care areas when requested.

17.

Keeps pharmacy ! areas clean, neat and well-organized.

Keeps pharmacy equipment clean.

18.

Completes all assigned medication storage area inspections in a timely manner.

19.

Conducts quality monitors, collects data and completes documentation, as assigned.

20.

Attends staff meetings.

Participates in orientation, education and training programs.

Reviews literature and other materials as assigned.

21.

Completes all competency/skills assessment requirements.

Performs work within specified time frames.

Adapts positively to frequent interruptions and changes in workload and/or work schedule.

Demonstrates sound professional judgment consistent with clinical/academic background.

24.

Adheres to hospital and departmental policies and procedures.

Complies with all req! uirements related to risk management, safety, security, fire and infect! ion control.

Complies with all applicable Federal and State laws, rules and regulations.

Performs all duties under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist.

25.

Processes all returned medication, enters credits to patient’s profile, returns medication to stock as appropriate.

26.

Maintains logs, records and other required documentation accurately.

Files in appropriate locations, including all entered physician orders, floor stock charges and requisitions, narcotic charge slips and other paperwork in proper cabinets.

Signs off and files all computer generated refill lists.

27.

Prepares compounded medication for dispensing, based upon calculated formulas and written physician orders.

28.

As assigned by pharmacists, delivers controlled substances and paperwork to nursing units.

29.

Enters, reschedules and discontinues routine medication order! s from written physician orders to patient profiles, as assigned.

30.

Maintains clean work areas, including aseptic cleaning of IV hood and chemo hood as required.

31.

Completes inspection of assigned medication on a monthly basis; assists in maintaining inventory of crash cart drugs with adequate dating.

32.

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of basic mathematical concepts with the ability to perform dosage or quantity calculations accurately.

Knowledge of common safety policies and procedures.

Skill in operating a personal computer and various software packages including the Microsoft Office Suite.

Ability to perform work accurately with attention to detail within specified times.

Ability to work and communicate professionally cooperatively with hospital and pharmacy staff.

Ability to handle frequent interruptions and adapt to changes in workload and work schedule.

Ability to set priorities and solve problems.

Ability to write legibly.

Ability to interact with patients, coworkers and other medical center personnel in person or by telephone, in a pleasant, courteous manner.

Ability to meet the pharmaceutical care needs of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, geriatric, psychiatric, obstetric, oncology, chemically dependent, rehabilitation and skilled-nursing patients.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or equivalent is required.

College courses desirable but not required.

Pharmacy technician certification and hospital pharmacy technician experience preferred.
